WHAT IS MUSIC THERAPY?
CONNECTION
Music Therapy is the use of music as a connection. Psychotherapists use dialogue as their connecting medium; music therapists use music as our connection to reach out to our clients.
However, even before the music may begin, the personal connection between the client/therapist needs to occur. This may be a smile, a nod, a sound, or making meaningful eye contact for a moment. A trusting and safe environment must be established before therapy begins.
EVIDENCE BASED
Music Therapy is the clinical and evidenced-based use of music interventions to reach out to a client in need. The music (or sound) making will not always be what we commonly know as “beautiful music”, or it might be. But it can also be making call and response sounds or babbling with an infant; song-writing with adolescents; singing familiar songs with clients with dementia or Alzheimer’s; hospice bed-side music interventions with a client with her/his family or fingerplays with toddlers. While we have goals in mind, emotional, communication, cognition, well-being, we work in the moment watching for clients’ responses and needs as they occur.
